In this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show: Ask The Expert, Daryl Berden from Ridgewater Homes answers questions about renovations.
Q: How do you revamp a dated exterior on a house?
Daryl Berden: With dated exteriors, you tend to see a lot of vinyl and aluminum siding. stucco, and old paint, which sometimes contains lead. Because of these kinds of dated materials, a lot of houses need to be updated. This house (shown in the video above) in particular has old, aluminum siding. To fresh up the home, we took off the aluminum siding, and replaced the siding, trims, doors, and windows. The goal here was to give the entire home a fresh and modern look. We did cedar soffit to create something that was unique and different as well.
Q: Would you recommend opening up an older home?
DB: In my experience, when you open up some of these older houses, they tend to be very tight with a lot of walls. These kinds of floor plans tend to be opened up. In this house, we opened up the back to their sunroom. We also removed a couple of closets to create an open feeling at the entranceway.
Q: When is it time to renovate a bathroom?
DB: When you renovate a bathroom depends on the age of the house. This house is an older house, built in the 1970s. It had a toilet and a sink for the ensuite. The homeowners wanted more space, another sink, and a shower. To do this, we expanded the house by three feet and took what used to be the closet and turning it into the shower.
