Don’t you just love the feeling you get when you know you’ve taken care of something around the house? I’ll admit it; usually I hire someone to get the job done for me, but these are small enough projects that even I don’t mind taking on myself that will make you feel good!

1-Level my kitchen cabinet doors – it’s so easy to do and it will make the world of a difference in the appearance of your kitchen! You’ll wonder why you didn’t do this months ago.

2-Change my light bulbs for energy efficient ones – This is a real “feel good” task because you’re taking one step in improving your homes efficiency and helping our environment at the same time. I like the new Philips Ambient LED lights (available at The Home Depot) – they last up to 15 years and are even dimmable. The cool looking yellow-coloured bulb produces a soft white 12.5 w light which is comparable to 60 watts! And the best part is that after 15 years of use, the bulb practically pays for itself!!

3-Replace my switch plates – These are so simple to change and new more modern plates will instantly update the look of your home.

4-Paint touch ups or an accent wall – Everyone has left over paint from when their home was last painted, so make use of it and touch up those nicks and scratches that have been bothering you!

5-Replace my shower head – Give your shower a facelift by swapping your old showerhead for something new and more modern. One of my personal favourites would have to be the brand new Brizo showerhead from their Charlotte line. It’s truly unique design and H20 kinetic technology will make it the feature of your bathroom space.  (H20 kinetic technology works by injecting bubbles in the water flow which produces a denser, warmer blanket while actually using less water!)

6-Caulk and seal gaps – This might be something you’ve never thought of doing but it’s so worth it and you’ll be glad you took the time do it. Seal air leaks but also prevent water damage inside and outside of the home when applied around faucets, water pipes, drains, bathtubs and other plumbing fixtures.

7-Repurpose an old piece of furniture – Take some time to re-vamp and put the life back into an aged piece of furniture that’s just sitting around and not getting any use. It can be a really fun Saturday afternoon project with the kids or even on your own. Get creative in how you treat the chair, and try going outside of your comfort zone with colour and design.

Check out this DIY bench that we made that I featured on CityLine last April! We took 3 old dining chairs, painted them all out in black and got our dear carpenter to make us a bench seat which we painted in Benjamin Moore’s Rocky Mountain Sky 2066-40. To soften the look, we had a seat cushion made along with the cute ties to go around the legs. Lastly we got some throw cushions from Ikea to finish off the look.
