Q: I’m planning on getting a tattoo for the first time. What advice do you have for me?
Colin Ditchfield: The main thing you want to consider when choosing a tattoo is do your research. Go online, check out online Google reviews, Instagram portfolios, and make sure you find an artist that best suits the style you’re looking for. Well before you plan on getting your tattoo, you want to go into the studio in person, have a look around, and see if the atmosphere is suitable. While you’re there, meet the artist you’re looking into, make sure you ask questions, make sure their sterilization procedures are up-to-date, make sure they have a Bloodborne Pathogens certificate, ask them if their needles and equipment are single-use only or if they’re sterilizing them in house. If they’re sterilizing in house, ask to see how they’re sterilizing. Ask as many questions as you want and the artist should have no problem answering your questions. Once you put some time into getting your tattoo design though out with your artist, spend some time with your artist to make sure you communicate and get your ideas on paper clearly. Once that’s done, view the art prior to getting a tattoo and never agree to a tattoo that you’re not 100 percent on.
