Arguably, the trickiest part of any home renovation project, is the jumping off point! This segment of the show is geared at viewers and readers who are on the brink of a challenging renovation project and need some tips on how to take a reno from theory to practice. So, today on The Marc and Mandy Show: Ask An Expert, Professional Contractor and HGTV Celebrity, Mike Holmes Jr. shares his advice for where to start with a home renovation project.

Q: When starting a home renovation project, what should I prioritize first?

A: When starting a home renovation project, you should prioritize the outside. Start from the outside in and work your way on the inside. Don’t start with your kitchen, don’t start with your granite countertops–what matters, particularly at the onset, is what you don’t see. Think: the roof, what’s behind the walls, if it’s insulated properly. Once those foundational elements are nailed down, then you can plan your kitchen and your granite countertops.

Great tip…we kind of did the opposite, but our outside is good for now.

Very important tips for remodelling! The outside of your home is the first impression to others and it needs to be structurally sound first and foremost.
