4-Season Greenhouse Growing
In this episode of The Marc and Mandy Show, Ben Canning of Arctic Acres shows you how to set up a year-round greenhouse, providing fresh vegetables and fruit all year long right in your own backyard.
Ben Canning: I think that more than ever people are starting to question where we get our food from. I’m standing in this greenhouse and this particular client made the decision to say you know what we need to be more prepared, we need to have access to food, we have the ability to grow it, and they got set up. The look, the design, the feel, being able to come into a space like this with your family and be able to grow and see things actually flourish in the cold winter months, that’s where it really hits home for a lot of folks. This greenhouse is called a geodesic greenhouse it’s a dome comprised of triangle structures it’s one of the strongest shapes known to man. These domes are rated for seven feet of snow load directly on top of it. They’re rated for 180 kilometer an hour wind speeds. With four to five hours of sunlight they can warm themselves up and keep that heat overnight by up to 30 degrees celsius. All of these things really matter when it’s December and there’s only 10 hours of sunlight and it’s negative 30 outside. That really starts to matter when you have a thick, hard polycarbonate outer structure and a heavy duty structure to hold all that weight and snow load and anything in between. One of the really important things about these domes is that they come as pre-fabricated kits. One of the really interesting and unique things we include is a thermal battery kit. And what that means is we include a large pool inside of every greenhouse kit that we sell. That pool of water is located in the north wall of every greenhouse. Our cold wall is then insulated with a reflective material and that material actually directs sunlight into that pool of water. And the whole idea of it is we’re able to use the heat we have to keep our plants warm using an under soil heating system as well as solar venting systems to intake and exhaust air that heat radiates out into the greenhouse and maintains a nice comfortable temperature all day long and all night long with only four to five hours of sunlight. Imagine that this structure was in your backyard and being able to grow all of your own fresh vegetables and fruit right here. And when we say grow it’s not just vegetables. You can do whatever you would like to do in here. You can grow whatever you’d like to grow in here.
