Becoming Self Aware
We have Life Style coach and Motivational Speaker Reno Johnston to discuss with us the art of self awareness. Self awareness is understanding how we feel, how we think and how we behave. Sometimes we are so wrapped up in everything that is going on around us that we forget to check in with ourselves. Reno states that is called projecting, where we need to be aware of how we are feeling and that we might be projecting that feeling onto another person. The self awareness of that behavior is so important. However, understanding the other person is so very crucial because so often how you interpret a message is very different as to what the intended message might have been.
There is a large part of self awareness that revolves around our insight and knowledge of our strengths and weaknesses. We seem to struggle to identify what we are good at and what we are not, and it is crucial to truly own that. We live better lives by looking at what we appreciate and value in other people. Reno encourages us to identify people who you look up to, who are living the way you want to, who are navigating life the way you would want to and pinpoint some of their characteristics you would like to emulate? You may be putting these people on a pedestal but Reno says that you might have these same positive qualities deep inside yourself but that you are just not aware of them. He says that if you continue to nurture and honor these qualities, not just as aspirations but as something tangible, they can flourish from within.
Reno suggests an interesting exercise called ‘’How do you see me?’’ Get together with a few close friends who can be honest with you. You want to find out how they view you, where they can give you honest, constructive criticism on paper. Getting that feedback is very important in getting to know how you are perceived by the world and then to tweak it to better yourself.
Finally, exercises like journaling and meditation are also important tools that allows us to go inward and reflect on our thoughts, our feelings and what emotions are coming up. Eventually, these helpful techniques can help us start to develop self awareness.
