Lighting Tips for Beginners
Good lighting is imperative to good design. In the spirit of good lighting, this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show features Interior Designer Kelsey Kosman. Today on the show, Kelsey discusses the importance of lighting in the home.
Lighting Tip # 1: Scale
A little rule of thumb for selecting the right size lighting fixture for your space is to take the width and length of the room, add those two numbers together, and then change whatever sum you get to inches. How ever many inches you end up with can serve as a rough estimate for what the diameter of your lighting fixture should be.
Lighting Tip # 2: Consider Overhang
One common question Kelsey gets is: how much distance should there be between a hanging light fixture and the ceiling. Kelsey recommends 30 to 36 inches, depending on the height of your ceilings.
Lighting Tip # 3: Bedside Lighting
Where you put your bedside lighting is another important detail that can be easily overlooked. Kelsey recommends putting around 20 inches of distance between the top of the mattress to the under-side of the bedside lampshades. This will help to diffuse the light properly.
Lighting Tip # 4: Change Your Lampshades
Once common misconception when it comes to lighting is that once you’ve decided on a lighting scheme, it’s set in stone. In actuality, changing up your lighting can be done at any point to give your room a refreshed feel, without doing much work. If you’re not so handy, consider changing things like your lampshades instead.
