Q: I’m building a big deck in my yard. What are some ways I can save money on its design?
Paul Lafrance: If there’s one area where you shouldn’t be afraid to spend a bit more money, it’s on your deck floor. It’s absolutely crucial to understand that a wood or cedar deck floor is going to potentially be a detriment to your property value, because nobody has time to maintain these kinds of surfaces. And what is the point of going into your backyard, looking around, and thinking about all that maintenance you have to do. Using a composite or PVC decking is absolutely imperative because the return on your investment—even on a very simple deck—will be 90 percent.
