Advice When in Trouble with the Law
Sometimes situations in life arise that leave us in trouble with the law. If that happens, how do we navigate these waters? In this episode of The Marc and Mandy Show, Family Therapist Gerry Goertzen shares some tips with Mandy for times when people find themselves on the wrong side of the law.
Mandy: Where does somebody even start in a situation like this exactly?
Gerry: I mean, to be human is to error and some of those errors end up in front of a judge. On the way to that hearing or the trial there’s a few things people need to do. First of all, get yourself a good lawyer
Mandy: How do you know what’s a good lawyer?
Gerry: Word of mouth referrals are probably the best way, but do some research. Call two or three and get a feel for what their capabilities are and what their experience is because and not every lawyer specializes in the same thing. Defence lawyers have different areas of expertise or experience, so look for the one who’s got the most experience in the area of trouble that you find yourself in. Also get yourself a therapist. Find a good counselor who’s versed in criminology or even specializes in it. Someone who can then work together with in consultation of the lawyer and provide some help to paint a bigger picture of you because going before the justice system is typically black and white, meanwhile life is never just black and white. So, a therapist is going to help you uncover what got you here in the first place and maybe there’s some co-occurring issues that if they were understood or diagnosed they might have bearing on the outcome of your case.
Mandy: How do you ask for support in regards to friends and family? Because it must be all of a sudden very lonely it’s a very big experience that you’re going through.
Gerry: Some family and friends won’t show themselves to be that supportive, but you’ve got to risk it anyways because a judge will look at that in your profile they want to know that you actually have resources. So, you have family, you have employment, you’re attending support groups, things like that.
