The Difference Between Annual and Perennial Flowers
In short, perennials flowers return season after season after planting. On the other hand, annual flowers last only for one season. With that said, annuals typically have a longer blooming period, from the start of the season until frost, so they can be enticing because they will be consistent and colorful throughout the season.
Tips for Planting Annuals and Perennials
- Your garden should be a good mix of perennial and annual blooms. While perennials are lower maintenance and cut down on the work associated with planting, annuals provide more color and flowers that span the entire season.
- Before putting anything into the ground, make sure you do your research so that you are planting each flower in an ideal spot.
- After first planting anything, water deeply. Also water deeply during dry spells. You can also use mulch to preserve moisture and prevent weeds.
- Remove weeds frequently. Weeds will compete with your flowers for water and nutrients.
- Always be patient when planting and don’t expect perennials in particular to grow to their full capacity the season after planting. It can take two or three seasons for perennials to reach their full capacity.
