Advice for Loving Your Home
On this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show, Tommy Smythe gives advice for choosing the right design style, and Chris Palmer shares tips on buying a fixer-upper home.
Tommy Smythe: The most important factor when designing a room is get the plan right before you start shopping for things. So many people go out and get something that’s the wrong scale or the wrong color and then you’re stuck with it. So have a plan make a plan and then execute that plan slowly and carefully. And with patience, over time, choose a design style that suits you. You have to do a little bit of research. You can use the internet, you can go to books, libraries, but find something that you like visually and then do some research on that particular style or that particular designer. We all do this for a reason in terms of putting things out in the media, so we want you to get ideas from us. We want you to be inspired by us and copy what we’re doing, but put your own spin on it. Always do that and take your inspiration from the pros, because we know.
Chris Palmer: So, if you’re looking for a fixer-upper home, what do you look for? I would suggest that you first do the circumference of the building. I know that’s a bit of a loaded thing. Go around the building and check the foundation, look at the bones of the building, because bones are everything. Now what are bones? It is anything from the framing, the brickwork, the foundation, the concrete, and even if you can get into looking into the plumbing. In the basement, if it’s all roughed and it’s unfinished check this stuff out make sure it’s not dated, not cracked, not leaking, not showing any signs of stress that might cause a problem in the next year to come. Because whether you’re flipping it now or you’re going to flip it in another two years, however long it takes to do it, you need to know that these problems aren’t going to come back to haunt you after you purchase. My best renovation tip for homeowners is not to be upset if things take longer than they should. Staying on track with your time and schedule is always a wonderful thing when it happens, but sometimes there are hiccups and bumps in the road that we don’t see that are behind the walls or perhaps in the shipment of the product that’s coming to the site. That’s why a little bit of patience is always good to have.
