Affordable Room Makeover – Easy DIY Nightstand
Designer Lisa Clark shows us how to upcycle an old wooden nightstand for a fresh, modern look. This nightstand was painted in BeautOld furniture takes up a lot of space and tends to be difficult to get rid of and expensive to replace. If you have a quality piece of furniture kicking around, which is simply a little outdated, Celebrity Designer Lisa Clark has an upcycling project that might suit you.
Step 1: Change up the color
For this DIY project, Clark transforms a dated wood-look nightstand/side table into a fresh and modern accent piece, using a gorgeous paint color: Beauti-tone’s Manual Entry. This is a great color to use because, while it’s not a traditional neutral, it is still a neutral.
Step 2: Change up the hardware
The original hardware on this nightstand is high-polished brass, which gave the unit a bit of a dated, ’90s feel right off the bat. Clark chose to upgrade the brass, opting for a brushed gold finish, which is trendy and current. In keeping with the brushed gold theme is the custom detailing, which appears on the drawer of the side table. The detailing is comprised of nail head trim. This unique element lends the side table some character and personality, and takes the piece to the next level.
Step 3: Stylize
To style this accent piece, Clark has employed a tall lamp, which lends the nightstand some much-needed height. To give your nightstand the look of balance, experiment with accessories of various heights. TIP If you’re feeling a little lost in terms of styling, stick to odd numbers. For example, having three items on your side table – (a lamp, a picture frame, and flower pot) – will look better than having just two.
