Charging Electric Cars
On this episode of The Marc and Mandy Show, Charles Baverstock Stonebridge Operations Inc. tells Mandy how to charge an electric car and get your house ready for it.
Mandy: Electric cars are becoming a very popular vehicle for people, but how do you go about charging them and what do you need for your home? I have Charles from Stonebridge Operations Incorporated with me to talk to us about just that. So you get this beautiful new electric car, you bring it home, and I need to charge it. What do I do now?
Charles: Most cars right now, for the electrical market, they do have the ability to be able to take in a regular electrical cord and you can plug them in to initially charge that before they actually move up and install a rapid charger for their car. It’s the higher current charging that people want because a regular 15 amp extension cord will usually only charge the car maybe in 24 hours.
Mandy: Now, with the installation of the rapid charger, is that something that can be wired into your existing electrical panel? What’s the requirements for that the electrical panel that you have currently?
Charles: If there’s breaker space and as well as service space, the charger can definitely be wired in. And sometimes they’re actually installed outdoors as well. And those chargers can be set as to the amount of current that they draw so that they don’t actually cause an overload within the house circuit itself or the main breaker to blow.
Mandy: Now, let’s talk a little bit about the financial side of it. We know that a lot of times hydro companies and that sort of thing can give rebates towards energy efficiency. Does this apply to these types of charging stations?
Charles: That’s correct, it does. BC hydro, depending on the time of year, will actually offer a rebate for the chargers to be installed. Sometimes there’s also rebates from the manufacturer of the car itself where they will pick up the cost up to 50 percent of the installation of the cost of the charger,
