Color Correcting Tips for Perfect Skin
Amanda De Roy of Sheriff Cosmetics shares color correcting tips for your skin.
Whether you’re new to the makeup game or a seasoned veteran, color correcting can be a daunting process, and one that’s difficult to get right on the first try. In that spirit, we’ve rounded up some tips to help you achieve maximal results when color correcting.
Understand Your Undertone
Identifying your undertone is the first, and arguably most important, step in finding the right foundation for your skin tone. Your skin can have either warm or cool undertones, and you can figure out which category you fall into using a couple of simple tricks.
- What color are your veins? If your veins are blue, you likely have cool undertones; green, you likely have warm undertones.
- How does your skin react to the sun? If you tend to turn golden or brown when you tan, you probably have warm undertones; if you turn red or pink, you probably have cool undertones.
- What kind of jewelry suits you? If you find that silver or platinum jewelry looks best against your skin, it’s a safe bet that your undertones are the cooler side; if gold jewelry suits your, your undertones are likely warmer.
You can also gauge your undertones by simply looking at your skin, and identifying if it has an underlying hue of yellow or olive, (which would indicate warm undertones), or pink or blue, (which would indicate cool).
Select Your Foundation
Here’s where knowing your undertone comes into play: if you have cool undertones, your foundation should be more pink; warm, your foundation should be more yellow. Apply the product on the décolletage area (or the clavicle bone) to see if it’s a good match to the skin tone.
Start Color Correcting
Before applying foundation, begin applying the color correcting on problem spots, or spots with discoloration. A common one for a lot of women is underneath the eyes. Apply the product in an “x” motion.
Apply Concealer and Foundation
After you’re done correcting problem areas, go over the areas with a flesh-toned concealer and the aforementioned flesh-toned foundation. Again, apply the products in an “x” motion. Don’t forget to apply the product right up to the hairline, to avoid a mask-like look.
Apply Translucent Powder
As its name suggests, the translucent powder should have no color to it, and serves to remove any extraneous shine, for flawless, polished results.
