Be In The Moment
Compliments seem more genuine when they are given early on. They also make for a great conversation ice breaker, making them an invaluable tool when you are getting to know someone new.
Always Exercise Genuity
Compliments work best if they are sincere. On the flip side, they are more likely to backfire if they are not genuine, coerced, or are fuelled by a motive.
Be Specific
A compliment that brings positive attention to something specific is always better than giving a compliment that is vague and generic.
Time and Place
While compliments can be paid in nearly any regard, it’s important to consider the factors of time and place when paying a compliment. Setting can play an important role in whether a compliment is appropriate.
Pay It Forward
Much like a good deed, a compliment can be paid forward. Paying forward a compliment is a great way to pass along positivity to somebody who needs it or would appreciate it.
