Cottage Railings & Decks
So, you’ve got your beautiful cottage property right on the lake, now it’s time to complete the look and add safety to your property with railings. In this episode of The Marc and Mandy Show, Mandy talks with Dan Cosens from Prairie Accent Railing about railings and decks for your cottage. Check out the video above or keep reading for the highlights of their chat.
Mandy: You’ve got a beautiful view of the lake from your front deck where you can sit and have your morning coffee, but you need a railing on there. What can you do to not obstruct the view?
Dan: We get a lot of calls for that. We do a lot of work in cottage country. We do a lot of powder-coated aluminum railings. And powder coated aluminum is nice because you have hundreds of colors to choose from.
Mandy: You’re not just stuck to a couple of stains?
Dan: Yes, and it’s not going to rust or rot. It’s a lifetime product and it’s maintenance-free, so when you’re at the cottage, you don’t have to worry about staining anything. Now, for the railing options, there are lots of glass options you can use. We do a lot of 3/8th and half inch thick tempered glass, where it’s just supported by the post, and that way you can maintain the nice, clear view.
Mandy: You don’t have to have that big beam going across the top?
Dan: You don’t need it. Exactly, yeah. So if you use half inch glass tempered glass, it’s nice and strong.
Mandy: Is it safe around your kids? If they run into it, it’s not going to shatter everywhere?
Dan: Exactly, yeah.
Mandy: Now, we’ve taken care of the view. Maintaining the quality of the deck itself, is there an easy way to do that?
Dan: Well, we specialize in a product called Weather Deck. What it is a PVC sheet, which was actually developed to be a roof deck membrane. What that means is it’s 100 percent waterproof, comes in 28 different patterns and colors, and it has a 15 year warranty. You should get about 25 years from it. It protects your plywood, your joists, and your beams against any kind of rot of deterioration.

I’d love some low maintenance decking, but I fear that puppy nose prints would not accessorize this look in the way I’d like, lol
Very nice deck – we could certainly use a new one!
