Creating a Small Bathroom in the Basement
Putting a bathroom in a small space in a basement can sometimes be a challenge. Marc shares his tips for making a small basement bathroom a reality!
1. People often freak out about having to re-do the plumbing in their basement, but we’ve got a really neat way to sidestep that problem. If you’ve ever installed a toilet, and for husbands out there that tried to install a toilet that weren’t supposed to, you might notice that the sewage pipe goes into the ground. So with a concrete basement, you would have to literally break into the concrete in order to add all of the plumbing. A SaniCompact by Saniflo allows you to actually put a bathroom in an existing basement without having to hammer into the concrete to add plumbing, saving you time and money! The SaniCompact only uses 4L of water per flush which is great for conserving water.
2. I choose a darker colour, Notable Hue by Sherwin-Williams, for our on-set bathroom display. A lot of people think that in a small space, you need a really light color. We’ve been told this for years and years but that’s not the truth. Actually, you can have a dark color, you could even have a really, really dark hue. You want to make sure you have proper lighting. That is the key to making a dark colour work well in a small space.
3. I’m a big fan of white cabinetry and white appliances and fixtures within a space. You want to create contrast. So if you’re going to have a bright color on the wall, you want to make sure you’re creating contrast and more of a neutral color.
4. For a custom look on a budget, install an affordable vanity and change up the hardware. You get a custom look without that custom price.
5. I love the look for a seamless sink that’s integrated right into the counter top! It’s easier to clean, there’s no caulking line to get dirty or moldy, and it’s so much more sanitary.
6. While I’m not a huge fan of being overly matchy, I love this bathroom set from Moen. You don’t have the budget to hire a design, but you want to make sure you have a coordinated look, you could literally go into a store, pick out this Moen faucet and the matching towel bar, shower faucet, etc. No matter what you do for decor, your basic pieces will look great together! The set comes in a variety of different finishes which is great. I love the chrome because I’m a big fan of chrome. I think it’s really nice and contemporary.
7. In a small bathroom, a good size mirror is a must. A lot of people think that in a small space you basically have to have a small mirror, small everything. A nice big mirror will reflect light through-out the space. It will open up the space to make it look brighter and airy.
