DIY Sugar Scrub
Have you ever wondered if there’s a difference between a sugar scrub and a salt scrub? Then stay tuned, because this segment is all about scrubs; what they are, why you should use them, and how to DIY your own at home.
What is a scrub?
A scrub is typically comprised of one part oil and two parts exfoliate. It is a step beyond your daily moisturizing routine, and if done correctly, scrub treatments can help with skin rejuvenation, elasticity, and collagen production.
Why use a scrub?
The main benefit of using a scrub is to exfoliate, a.k.a. remove old and dead skin cells. In addition, scrubs tend to include a moisturizing agent, to replenish the skin of any moisture it lost during the exfoliation stage. Using a scrub regularly will lend your skin vibrancy and glow; however, it is cautioned against using scrubbing products too regularly, which could cause damage to the skin. Once a week is a good amount to use a scrub on your body, face, or lips.
What’s the difference between a salt and sugar scrub?
Sugar granules tend to be smaller than salt, making them less abrasive in scrub-form. Sugar scrubs are recommended for application on sensitive areas, such as the face and lips. On the other hand, salt scrubs are good for removing dead skin on tougher areas, such as on feet or elbows.
DIY: Sugar Scrub
What you’ll need: 1/2 cup sugar, (white or brown), 1/2 coconut oil, essential oils (optional)
In a bowl, combine your white or brown sugar and coconut oil, and fold the two together until the lumps have dissolved. If you’re finding the mixture to still be lumpy, employ the use of your hands, as your body heat should help to melt the oil. Add in essential oils as desired, and store your sugar scrub in an airtight container.
DIY: Salt Scrub
What you’ll need: 1/2 cup salt, 1/2 coconut oil, essential oils (optional)
In a bowl, combine your salt and coconut oil, and fold the two together until the lumps have dissolved. Again, if you’re finding the mixture to still be lumpy, employ the use of your hands. Add in essential oils as desired, and store in an airtight container. MANDY’S TIP: If you’re planning on using this salt scrub on your legs and/or feet, add in a few drops of peppermint essential oil. Peppermint oil has a therapeutic cooling effect, and when used topically, it can help to relieve aches and pains.
