Designer Evelyn Eshun shares tips to design and build the perfect family space in your basement.

The basement is a wonderful space that, when finished, can expand your house by double! The key is to keep it comfortable and make it very functional for your family. I’ll give you an example. I did a fabulous basement for a family recently and we did a contemporary built in. We had a sectional in there, wood flooring, a really great space. Now what do you do to keep it comfortable like the first floor?

DRIcore! This is a fantastic product. It’s a foam on one side and wood ply on the other. It’s a floating subfloor essentially, and it just clicks together. This is the first layer that you put on. Right after the concrete you put the DRIcore and it insulates. It’s an R4 which is fantastic. Essentially, your basement becomes as comfortable as your first floor. It also protects your investment from moisture and dampness which is really key in those underground spaces.
