Expert Q&A: Choosing an Auto Repair Shop
Today on The Marc and Mandy Show: Ask An Expert, Franco Borrelli from Hallmark Auto Body shares some advice about what to look for in an auto repair shop. Keep reading for the expert-approved Q&A.
Q: What should a consumer remember when choosing a collision repair shop to fix their vehicle.
Franco Borrelli: Remember, as the owner of the vehicle, it’s your job to decide who repairs that vehicle. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Choose a shop that’s been in business for a long time and a shop that serves the local community. If you have to come back in the years to follow, they’ll have a history of your repair and they will be there to take care of you.
- Educate yourself and ask questions about the repair process. If the shop is going to to engage and answer your questions, they’re going to take the time to understand what your needs are and they’re going to repair that vehicle to your expectations.
- Ask for a tour of the repair facility. That’s a great way to visually confirm your choice. If the shop is neat and organized and tidy, then chances are the repair process is going to be done in the same manner.
Today’s vehicles are highly complicated and complex, so they require a high level of sophistication to be repaired properly. These vehicles have computerized systems, they have electrical components, they have censors that need to be recalibrated, and they need to be pre- and post-scanned to make sure they’re put back on the road safely. So ask the shop, do they reinvest in training and do they reinvest in the equipment required to bring the vehicle back to OEM specifications so that the vehicle is safe for you and your passengers.

Hello, so my boyfriend is looking for a reliable auto body shop to fix the damage to his car after a recent small fender collision. Finding a shop that can do quality repairs and restore his car to factory standards without going over budget is crucial to him. I’ll advise him to pick a store that has been there for a while and one that caters to the neighborhood. You stated that if you need to return in the years to come, they will be prepared to help you since they will be aware of your maintenance history.
You made a good point on how to request a tour of the repair facility because it’s an excellent chance to see your option in action. You said that it’s likely that the repair procedure will go the same way if the shop is clean, tidy, and organized. Let me share this with my dad who had been complaining about a persistent engine warning light in his BMW, and he finally decided it was time to get it sorted out. He’s really attached to his car and wants it in top-notch condition, so he’s actively looking for a reputable BMW specialist to take a look and fix the issue.
You’re right—the shop will take the time to learn about your wants, address any concerns you may have, and fix the car to your satisfaction if they interact with you and answer your questions. Speaking of which, I’ve decided it’s time to step in and assist my brother in finding a technician to fix that clutch because his vehicle is making a symphony of noises. We are searching for someone who can do magic and get him back on the road without any problems, so please stop playing that music that makes you grind your gears.
I found it helpful that you explained how to ask to have a tour of the repair facility since this is a great opportunity to observe your choice in operation. You mentioned that if the shop is neat, orderly, and clean, the repair process would probably go in the same manner. Allow me to share this with my father, who finally decided it was time to get his BMW’s chronic engine warning light fixed after moaning about it for a while. He is actively searching for a reliable BMW specialist to examine and resolve the problem since he is devoted to his vehicle and wants it to be in excellent shape.
