Expert Q&A: Fireplace Re-Face
In this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show, Ivan Rapa from Erth Coverings answers questions about re-facing fireplaces. Keep reading for the Q & A.
Q: Can my brick fireplace be re-faced?
Ivan Rapa: Generally, most brick fireplaces can be re-faced using a thin, natural stone veneer, such as Erth Coverings. Sometimes the brick face isn’t as even as it needs to be, so the installer may need to chip away at some of the brick or fill in some of the voids. Also we see a lot of brick fireplaces that have been painted over, so the installer needs to make sure that none of the paint is peeling off. If it’s an oil based paint, it may require a special mortar to adhere to. Otherwise, generally, brick fireplaces can be re-faced using stone.
Q: How much does it cost to re-face a fireplace?
Ivan Rapa: In terms of budget, there are a number of factors that’ll determine the final cost. These things are the type of stone selected, the size of the fireplace or the feature wall that you’re looking to cover, the accessibility to the wall (is it in a condo; is it in a home?). So in general, any of these factors would affect the price. Generally speaking, a fireplace that is 5 – 6 feet wide and 9 feet high will cost anywhere from $1,800 to $2,000 to reface.
