Expert Q&A: Pond Maintenance
To pond or not to pond, that is the question. On this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show: Ask The Expert, Jordan Ninkovich from Fraser Valley Pond answers questions about maintaining a clean and healthy pond.
Q: How often should my pond be professionally cleaned and maintained?
A: That’s a great question! Most ponds should be professionally cleaned at least twice a year, depending on the pond size. And if you see any troubled areas (such as: the water levels decreasing or an algae buildup) it’s definitely a smart move to call a professional to take a look at something like that. One little trick is: if you do see your water levels dropping and you have an active pump or waterfall, try shutting the pump off and see what happens. Doing this will confirm whether or not there is a leak in your pond.
Q: What are some things I can do to keep koi in my pond healthy?
A: Protecting koi is important, and the best thing to do to that end is to just generally keep your pond healthy. You can do this by:
- Checking your filters and UVs as often as possible
- Partial water changes to make sure that the water is clear and healthy for the fish
- Building a little safe area—perhaps an area for the fish to hide from birds and other predators
