Why do we hold elections?
Elections are a way to keep our political leaders accountable to the people. In theory, they allow every citizen the right to have a say in their own government, so long as they are of age.
What are the upsides to elections?
Elections are meant to ensure that everyone’s vote matters in equal amounts, so long as they are of age. Elections are a crucial element of democracy because political leaders are meant to represent the ideas and values of the people.
What are the downsides to elections?
The biggest downside to elections is that the system can become corrupt. At that point, it can difficult to regulate the system. The inability of governments around the world to successfully deal with corruption is causing a global crisis of democracy.
