Prioritizing Your Home Renovation
A home renovation can be both expensive and time-consuming, which is why you want to make sure it gets done the right way the first time around. In this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show: Love Your Home, Mike Holmes JR shares some tips on how to prioritize your home renovation.
Mike Holmes JR: I always tell people when you’re doing work on your home start with the outside. So work from the outside in and work on the priorities because what you want to do is to keep the weather out. That means keeping your home from molding and keeping it efficient. So insulating your home properly. That means thermally breaking your home. And then after you can start working on the lipstick and mascara, in other words, the hardwood floors, the kitchen, the tiles, the paint. Work from the outside in. You can always change your finishes, but once you have to upgrade the inside of your walls once you’ve changed the finishes it’s going to cost you a lot more money. I love old homes. Old homes have so much character. Sometimes a lot more character than the new homes that we’re building. You see a lot of new homes that don’t have as much character in the brickwork and the siding. With that said, older homes sometimes come with old problems, such as asbestos. So, any home built before 1985 has a chance of containing asbestos in either the plaster, the tiles, or the insulation. With old homes, you just have to be careful. You have to hire someone who knows what they’re doing. Hire a home inspector who can test for stuff like asbestos, for radon, all these things that you don’t want to breathe in. One of my best renovation tips I can give to anyone is don’t be afraid of the price tag. Instead, think about getting a return on your investment and using quality products in your home.
