Q: What’s your secret to surviving a home renovation project?
Mike Holmes Jr.: The best advice I can give to someone doing a home renovation project… it’s sort of a two or three part answer.
Plan well. It’s all in the planning; I’ll say this a million times. The only thing during a home renovation that you can save money is during the planning stage.
Find alternate accommodations. Do you not live through a renovation; stay somewhere else. My dad calls it “divorce dust” and there’s a reason it’s called that: because renovations are stressful on their own. Now, if you try to live through one, with your partner or family, that can sometimes cause unnecessary tension. So don’t live through that, live somewhere else. Budget that in and come up with a proper and realistic budget, so that you don’t go over budget and you are realistically spending what you need to spend.
In the end, it all comes down to planning, so plan it properly, plan to stay somewhere else, budget properly, and you should be all right.
