Q: What should homeowners know before redesigning their kitchen?
Mickey Fabbiano and Sebastian Sevallo: I would hope the homeowners would know an idea of what they want. Now, I understand not everyone knows exactly what they want or they think they have an idea of what they want–and that’s okay because that’s not their forte. That’s why they leave it up to us, the professionals. It’s important to know how different designs can go and so we give the best possible outline of what we can provide. But the most important part is to get to know that client. Kind of see their ins and outs, what they like, what they don’t like, and then give them ideas. Talk to your contractor your designer or yourself or your friends, who’s ever doing it, and sit down and see if you like the brass with the black finishes or you like the brick walls or the clean lines. If you’re going to be living in the home, this is going to be your dream home, or you plan on being there for a foreseeable amount of time, personalize the space. Plan for your own kitchen, do what makes you happy, and make it yours. If you think you’re going to sell in a couple years or you’re going to flip the house, absolutely do not do that. Make a nice generic kitchen–something that’s modern and with the times and with the styles. And you’re going to get a lot more money and a lot more return on your investment for sure, because then people don’t have to come in and undo what you did.
