Student Fashion: Shopping on a Budget
If you’re a student, you might find your shopping funds to be a little bit limited. In this segment, fashion expert, Kayla Wan, of Loka Boutique, shares some tips for getting the most out of the money and clothing that you have.
Tip: Stock up on basics
Basics, such as tank tops, and plain tees and long-sleeves tend to be more budget-friendly than statement pieces – not to mention, much more versatile. Basics can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. Another great thing about basics: they transcend any one season. For instance, you can wear a basic tank top alone during the balmy summer months, and underneath of a sweater or long-sleeve during the chilly winter months.
Tip: Invest in a quality outer piece
A quality jacket or sweater can go a long way, and can upgrade your look in an instant. A structured jacket or blazer in a neutral color can be worn for work, meetings, or out to drinks with your friends. For a jacket that errs on the side of casual, consider leather. For an even more casual compliment, a quality sweater, perhaps one that’s on the longer side, will keep you warm and stylish all winter long.
Tip: Opt for frill-free denim
When shopping, denim with distressing or embellishments might be tempting, but keep in mind, these bold elements will keep your denim from being truly versatile. Instead, opt for denim in a solid color, without frills and trendy features. This will ensure that your denim stays relevant and wear-able for longer.
Tip: Finish your outfit with a functional bag
Particularly for students, a bag that’s cute, as well as practical, is a must-have. A structured faux-leather handbag in a neutral color will likely serve you well.
