Mike Farnum: Hi Marc and Mandy, today we’re going to be talking about masonry use on home exteriors. One of the best reasons for using masonry is that it’s non-combustible, protecting your house from fire and the elements. Masonry is in fact the original non-combusting building material. Personally, my favorite aspect of masonry is the nearly zero maintenance involved with it. Other products such as wood or stucco require painting or staining many times over the years. When the maintenance is considered, the cost long term is not drastically different from the cost of masonry. Masonry is timeless, always in style, and it offers a wide range of design options from contemporary to rustic. The versatility is endless. From cladding your entire home to dressing front entrances and facades, masonry can be cut to fit any application. Classic red brick and natural stone are some of the easiest materials to match on century homes like this house, built in 1910. The homeowner built an addition with a red brick sandstone and mortar. All had to be consistent with the original home. Masonry like brick and stone extend well into outdoor spaces making it easy to complement outdoor living spaces, garden walls, and outdoor kitchens.
