Tips for Styling Your Mantle
Your mantle can easily become the focal point of your living area, so it’s important to style it carefully, with symmetry, asymmetry, and balance in mind. In this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show, Marc learns some tips and tricks to styling a mantle with designer Kelsey Kosman.
Display a piece of art
While it’s quite commonplace to display a TV over the mantle, Kelsey recommends investing in and displaying a piece of statement art instead. If you have the space, a piece of art can elevate the room and you can choose an art piece with colors that tie the other colors in the room together. When selecting an art piece, make sure the the width of the art piece does not surpass the width of the mantle. TIP If you’re decorating a rental property, or are unsure about the art piece itself, consider leaning the art piece against the wall above the mantle, rather than hanging it.
Consider symmetry
For a symmetrical look, display the same items on each side of the mantle. Aim for two taller items at each end of the mantle and two shorter items closer to the centre of the mantle. This method is simple and straightforward to execute and creates a look that’s visually balanced.
Consider asymmetry
The rule of when creating an asymmetrical arrangement is the rule of three. In other words, odd items tend to be more visually pleasing than even. If you are using three items of varying sizes, stagger them shortest to tallest. If you’re featuring an art piece over your mantle, the art piece can also be considered one of the three items.
