Start off with a quality item
When it comes to upcycling clothing, quality matters. You can’t start out with a garment that is worse for wear and expect to produce a quality from it. Pay attention to what condition the fabric is in, how much of it is usable, if there are any holes or pilling, and if the material is strong enough to be sewed.
Don’t forget to hem
Though it can be tempting to leave your upcycled garment with a raw hem because you like the way it looks, many materials will unravel over time, particuarly in the washing and drying machines. When hemming woven fabrics, make sure to turn the hem over twice. The one exceptions to this rule is knit fabrics, which won’t unravel over time.
Crop with caution
Cropping is one of the most popuar ways to alter clothing. It’s simple, straight forward, and can yield great results. When cropping, make sure to cut less rather than more. This is because you can cut more if the top is too long after your first go at cropping, but you can’t cut less if your top is too short. To get the best out of your crop, measure and mark a cutting line and make sure you are using a sharp pair of fabric scissors.
