Defining Space in an Open Concept
On this episode of The Marc and Mandy Show: Love Your Home, Red Barrineuvo shows how to set apart different spaces in an open concept home.
Red Barrineuvo: I am here at a beautiful penthouse suite and I’m going to give you some tips on how to define separate spaces in an open concept floor plan. First is furniture placement. Furniture pieces are an excellent way to differentiate areas in an open concept layout. This couch, for example. For a living and dining room combo, putting a couch in the middle of the room can immediately split the room in two and immediately build an invisible wall that distinguishes the living room and the dining room. Another way to define a space in an open concept floor plan is by using rugs. It is an easy way to define and create a more organized space. Another effective tool in separating space is by the use of light fixture. Hanging lights like pendant lighting or dining chandelier is perfect in defining a space. If we don’t put a dining chandelier in this area, this can easily get lost and get overlooked as part of the living room. And this is particularly important if you have a small space like a condo or an apartment. Since an open concept floor plan demands a uniform backdrop, it is important to use accessories like pillows and artwork to define every space. For example, in this living room we decided to put a gallery wall to highlight that this is the living room. On the other side, we decided to put different pieces which is bigger to show that this part is the dining room. And the kitchen–making your ceiling appear higher is not just a single step, it’s just a combination of optical tricks to create the illusion of height. Curtains for sure is the first step towards that. So I usually tell my clients to hang curtains as high as possible and touching the floor. And that is because the length of the curtains elongate the size of the room. Another great way to create the illusion of high ceiling is to use low profile furniture pieces. It will help emphasize the distance between the furniture and your ceiling. And finally, and I think this is the most important is to get rid of clutter, because when the room is not organized and cluttered it feels chaotic it feels cramped and it feels small. So by getting rid of clutter, you can immediately feel the difference of the room. It’s like night and day it will add additional space it feels airier and it’s more open.
