Advice on Maintaining Masonry
In this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show: Love Your Home, we learn how to take care of your home’s masonry with Greg Simmons of Simmons Masonry.
Greg Simmons: Whether you’re looking to add a new feature to your home or repair and restore your existing bricks, there are some things you need to know. It is important to maintain the structural integrity of your home, and as with anything in life, you want to start with the foundation. With masonry foundations, if they’re shifting or movement, it’s important to rebuild the masonry, tying back into the foundation and restoring the structural integrity. At other times, there is simply deterioration of the mortar joints, which then would need to be ground out and re-pointed and sealed. Once your foundation is good, then you want to move on to the remainder of the house. You want to look for cracking and deterioration of the mortar joints and if there are areas where the bricks have shifted and moved. It might be required to rebuild the bricks and realign with the existing walls. Otherwise, it’ll be the same as the foundation where you just want to grind to repoint and seal everything back up. If there are cracked or deteriorated bricks, those bricks will need to be replaced. Replacement bricks should be of the same color, and when possible, from the same time period as when the house was originally built. A proper and professional repair will be seamless and actually difficult to see where the repair was made. This will add curb appeal to your home and best of all will increase the value of your property and house.
