Cleaning and Maintenance Tips for Solid Surface Countertops
So you’ve chosen a solid surface counter top for your new kitchen; you’re not alone! This cost-effective counter top option has become a popular choice among homeowners, contractors and designers alike. One of the benefits of choosing a solid surface counter top is that they are easy to clean and maintain. Here are a few tips to help you keep your counter top looking like new!
Preventing Heat Damage: Solid surface counter tops will resist heat better than most other surfaces but changes in temperature can cause the material to expand and contract, resulting in scorching, cracking or seam separation. To prevent damage, never place hot pots directly on your counter top, ensure that portable appliances are supported on solid trivets with rubber feet and ensure that a vent hood or downdraft fan is used when working on a cook top or range.
Avoid Strong Chemicals: Harsh chemicals like stove and drain cleaners, paint removers or acetone-based products can damage the counter top. In the event of accidental contact, flush with soapy water immediately, rinse and then dry.
Always Use a Cutting Board: To avoid scratching your counter top, always use a cutting board.
Stains and Dirt: For stains or dirt, use soapy water or an ammonia-based cleaning solution.
Water Spots: To remove water spots, use a soft damp towel and wipe dry.
Difficult Stains: Spray stain with a household cleaner and wait for 30 seconds. Wipe surface with a damp, soft towel and wipe dry. If stain persists, repeat process as necessary.
Disinfecting: Every so often wipe the counter down with a 1:1 ration of water and bleach to disinfect.
Drying: After cleaning, make sure to dry the counter top completely. This will prevent the build-up of soap film or cleaning residue.
Soft Cloths: When cleaning your solid surface counter top; always use a soft cloth or towel. Don’t use a wash brush because it will damage the surface and create scratches that can harbor bacteria.
