How to Get Your Kids to Eat Veggies
Do you have trouble getting your family to add more fruits and vegetables in their diet? Amanda Nash, nutrition and food expert from the Heart and Stroke Foundation is with us to teach us some effortless ways to do just that.
Some typical reasons why kids won’t eat fruits and vegetables is because they are too crunchy. Texture and taste are often the reason why they won’t. Then you should seek out softer fruits and vegetables. One idea is to make a sauce such as pears and berries cooked on the stove top. This can then be used on waffles or yogurt for example.
If your kids like crunch you can make sweet potato chips. Slice the sweet potato, spray with a bit of oil, sprinkle with curry powder and pop into the oven for about 20 minutes. You can add a mango dip for the chips for a little bit of sweetness.
If your children don’t like broccoli or cauliflower, look for sweeter veggies such as carrots and roasted red peppers. Carrots can be added to cookies very easily and are delicious.
Vegetables provide you with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. We shall be making an edamame and roasted red pepper dip. Edamame is a legume but we shall consider it a vegetable that is a major source of fiber and iron. For the recipe, we shall add fresh basil, garlic, light mayonnaise, roasted red peppers to edamame beans. Next, we blend it all up in a blender or food processor. Amanda suggests getting the kids involved in the preparation of fruits and veggies because the more involved they are the more likely they will eat them.
She outlines the health benefits of fruits and veggies, especially lowering the risk of heart disease and strokes. This expert recommends considering purchasing frozen fruits and vegetables as the nutrients are well preserved when frozen at their peak. They are a wonderful option for you as well as dry or fresh options.
And finally, Amanda encourages us to be good role models. If children see us eating healthy foods, they shall do the same.
