Household Hacks: Rug Cleaning
In this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show, Greg Turcotte from Heirloom Rug Cleaning teaches Mandy how to clean and take care of your carpet and rugs.
Mandy: Everyone at one point or another will deal with some really stubborn stains on your carpets or rug. I have Greg from Heirloom Rug Cleaning with me and we’re going to talk about just that today. Now, in our home, we have a little senior dog, we have two a very rambunctious and messy children, what can we do to help protect the lifespan of our rugs in our carpet?
Greg Turcotte: One of the best things you can do on a regular basis is vacuum, and if you see that soiling is happening in areas, then you want to get it cleaned as soon as possible. Once you start to see soiling, build up that means that you’ve let your maintenance go a little bit too far. So get it maintained as quickly as possible. Things will get spilled on your area rugs, whether it’s kids’ juice or milk, mummy’s wine.
Mandy: What are some ways that we can help these things when they do happen?
Greg Turcotte: The best thing to do is blot it up with as much water as you can. If you have one of those little vacuum cleaners that can suck up water that is phenomenal because it will draw the moisture straight up rather than spread it out. After that then you can start looking at different cleaning methods, chemistries that might take it out. Sometimes people grab their cleaning products and all of a sudden they realize they’ve bleached or faded out the color in their rugs can. That be corrected. Quite often, if there’s bleach drops that have been accidentally spilled onto a carpet or a rug, we can quite often replace that color and bring it back to a normal appearance.
Mandy: What are some of the gentlest products to use if you have to blot out a deeper set stain?
Greg Turcotte: The best thing to do is use a little bit of your dish soap, something that is very mild. Even if you have say liquid laundry detergent, then you could use that because it’s meant for a textile. Once you’ve gotten the spot as best as you ca, a little bit of vinegar and water would help to neutralize the soap so that it’s not sticky.
