In this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show: Love Your Home, Landscape Designer Carson Arthur from Year-Round Landscaping Inc. answers your questions and shares advice for landscaping.

Carson Arthur: Hi Marc and Mandy, today we’re here to talk about how you plan your outdoor living spaces. The first thing you want to do when you’re planning your outdoor living spaces is think about how you’re going to use the space. Do you have a large family? Do you like to host large gatherings? Do you have children that like to play outside? Are they athletic. Do they want a sports court? Do they want batting cages? Do you just need a lot of green space for them to run around in? Here on this lovely property today, they have two lots here in the city where they’ve planned a lot of amazing things. They have an outdoor family space with a pavilion fire pits, they have an outdoor rink sports court, they have a beautiful play structure, as well as a gardening area for the family for vegetables and family dining. And then, overall, this lot is inner city with lots of greenery. You would never know that you were in the middle of the city. Another tip to consider is the lay of your land. Are you dealing with steep grades? Do you have a utility right away where you might not be able to plan the things you want? Sometimes with utility right-of-ways, you can apply to the city to have some liens on them and stuff like that. So you can plan on them with grading. It’s really important to have a landscape professional come out and help you so that you can determine where you might need a retaining wall to put in a patio and just really focusing on using the land as best as you can.
