Know when to start shopping
Though it may be tempting to start shopping for maternity wear the minute you begin to develop a bump, your best bet is to wait until you’re showing a little more. Some signs that it’s time to start shopping include when you’re unable to button or zip up your pants, your button down shirts won’t button, or your bump starts peaking out from your tops.
Stick to staples
Just like you would if you were building your regular wardrobe from scratch, you should build your maternity wardrobe starting with the basics. Depending on your lifestyle, you can invest in things like a few good pairs of jeans, a few longer tees and tanks, basic black leggings, and perhaps a LBD. You also want to make sure to invest in comfortable, supportive, and durable undergarments.
Pay attention to sheerness
Though you may not have had to worry about sheerness pre-pregnancy, testing for sheerness is important because your clothes could stretch and become see-through as your belly grows. Look for pieces that have plenty of stretch and are made of an opaque material.
When in doubt, spandex
For obvious reasons, spandex is the preferred material for many of us. Spandex is comfortable, forgiving, and easy to launder and maintain. For expecting mothers, spandex clothing is something you can begin to invest in early on in your pregnancy because it will stretch as your bump continues to swell.
