Modern Use of Red Cedar
Red cedar is a great material for building. It is lightweight and resistance to insects, water and rot, and for its unmistakable red colour and aromatic smell. In this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show: On Trend, Ryan Hagen and Bruce Molander show how to use red cedar in modern buildings.
Ryan Hagen: Hi Marc and Mandy, I’m here at the Best Western Barclay in Port Alberni, BC. This modern hotel showcases some of the trendiest applications of western red cedar today. Incorporating the cedar post and beam with some of the stonework and black iron accents adds a touch of sophistication to any patio. Here’s a great example of how the cedar beams can play off the stonework on the wall with black accents in the background. And if you look up here, these custom joints cut into the beams create a solid sight line down the beam. You can hide the bolts with these dowels and give it more of a modern feel rather than an industrial look.
Bruce Molander: There are many different applications for western red cedar. The traditional bench here, which really enhances the outdoor space, to my friend the owl. The owl has special significance. It’s a First Nation tradition of carving in the Port Vernee Valley, which we’re very proud to support.
