Painting Old Houses
On this episode of The Marc and Mandy Show: Love Your Home, Tino Demitro from I Paint Old Houses shares some tips and tricks for painting old houses.
Q: Why should someone hire a professional painter?
Tino Demitro: Especially when it comes to painting the interior of an older home, it really has everything to do with the prep. As a professional painting service, we end up prepping an interior of an older home for sometimes three to five days before we actually open any paint. There’s just so much involved in terms of sanding, prepping, caulking. In an older house, you have to know how to work with a lot of the more old-fashioned products the oil-based primers, shellacs, and varnishes. So, there’s just so much more as opposed to going into a newer home where you know it’s mostly a new drywall and new wood. At the end of the day it comes down to a color change, so that’s the main reason it’s just that high level of prep.
Q: Why should someone hire a professional to paint kitchen cabinetry and what are some DIY horror stories?
Tino Demitro: The horror stories generally start with the homeowner or the handyman going and picking up a gallon of paint and a brush and just going into the kitchen and putting the drop sheet down and just slapping that paint on on those cabinets. That’s really not the way to do it. The cabinets, for the most part, are always greasy and dirty because that’s where we’re doing our cooking. So the right procedure for us is that they’re thoroughly cleaned and degreased and wet sanded and hung to dry on our racks overnight. From there, they’re power sanded and wiped down again and vacuumed. And then, we spray on a very heavy-bodied urethane primer that gets sanded down. And then, it gets sprayed with two coats of cabinet paint and that’s about seven to ten days worth of work.
