Melissa Maker: Hi Marc and Mandy! Sometimes your space needs that extra deep cleaning, like my very messy space does right now, but it can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, with a good plan and a good method it’s a lot easier and a lot more methodical so you get it done quicker. I’m going to show you my three wave approach which makes this cleanup a heck of a lot easier.
The first wave in my three wave approach is to tidy and organized the space. I mean, how can you actually clean a space if it’s messy and cluttered. So, the idea here is to remove everything that doesn’t belong, from garbage to items that are just out of place and belong in another room. And the way that we set this up is we have stations available right here: garbage, recycling, a bin for items out of place, and a tray for items to go back to the kitchen. The way we actually do this is start at one point in the room and work our way clockwise around the space. That way, we don’t miss one corner.
Wave number two involves dusting disinfecting and polishing. Now that you actually have a clean space to work in, I use a high duster (which is just a pole with a cloth affixed to the top of it), an all-purpose disinfecting cleaner, a glass cleaner, and some microfiber cloth. We’re going to start at that same starting point and work our way all around the room. And as you go around the room you’re working your way from the top to the bottom because obviously that’s the way the dust falls doing. This is a great way to stay on track and be efficient.
The third in final wave which is taking care of the floor as well as any of the garbage or items that don’t belong in the room anymore. You’re going to remove any cleaning supplies, garbage, recycling, or any of the items that you put in your laundry basket or in your tray to go somewhere else. That way the space is completely empty and ready for you to finish up. When you’re vacuuming you’re not going to work your way around a room clockwise because it just doesn’t make sense. Instead you’re going to vacuum or mop your way out of the room so you start at the opposite end and you want to work your way to the exit point of the room. Remember if you have hard floor surfaces you want a vacuum or sweep before you mop. And of course, if you’re on a soft surface like a carpet, like me, I just get to vacuum. Following this simple three wave approach will help you manage even the most unruly space.
