Taking Care of Curly Hair
Curly hair: it’s both a blessing and a curse. Tyler Searle, from The Loft Salon Bar, explains how to better manage those coveted curls.
According to Searle, “The first step in achieving a natural curly style always starts at the sink” – or in the case of viewers at home, in your shower. First and foremost, you want to make sure you’re using curl-friendly products, right down to your shampoo. Shampoos that are designed specifically for curly hair tend to have more emphasis on moisturizing components, less sulphates and surfactant, and less foaming. These elements tends to strip the natural oils out of the hair, resulting in frizz and breakage.
How often you wash your hair is just as important as what you’re washing it with. According to our expert, people with curly hair should wash their hair less than average, (once every five to seven days), as to better retain any natural oils.
The key to curly hair is to touch it as little as possible once it’s dry. Apply conditioner when the hair is soaking wet, rinse it out, and always avoid towel drying. To dry the hair, simple “scrunch” the excess moisture out of the strands with your hands, and let the air do the rest. TIP: Before the hair dries out completely, apply a curling cream. Our expert recommends keeping a curl product in the shower, so it can be applied while the hair is still wet.
