Mind everyone’s sensitivities
Everyone has topics that they tend to be a little touchy about, so if there are some topics that should simply be avoided at the table, don’t be afraid to be the one to change the subject to help keep the peace. Some good examples of polarizing topics to stay away from are politics, why someone is single, and when a couple is planning to have children.
Find common ground
Funny stories about childhood, exciting career developments, and prospective family trips are all relatively safe topics to broach at the table.
Play a game
If you’re finding it tough to find common ground between everyone at the table, get everyone engaged in a game or activity of some sort. This could be a bored game, a word game, or even and exercise in thankfulness.
Start the festivities later
If you’re hosting, have people arrive later. Cutting the day short will lessen the stress on you, as the host, and also leave less time for fights, hurt feelings, and confrontation.
If you’re really concerned about conflict at the table, consider not serving alcohol, which can serve to exacerbate existing stressors and drama.
