Trendy Diets
Jordan Cieciwa shares the pros & cons of various ‘trendy diets’.
We all want to look and feel our best, but is the diet you’re on the best for you? For years, trendy diets have been notorious for gaining traction, but unfortunately not yielding optimal results. Though they will help you lose weight, it may not be in the healthiest of ways. That said, there is a reason why trendy diets remain trendy, one reason being that these diets often do have some scientific basis. Here are some trendy diets we’ve looked into.
The Cabbage Soup Diet
This diet’s been around for decades, and involves removing all proteins from your diet, animal and otherwise. This diet can be a dangerous one, in that when you omit those proteins, your immune system can suffer. While the cabbage soup diet will probably help you shed a few pounds, it could lead to more serious health problems down the road. If you’re sold on the cabbage soup diet, consider infusing it with a source of protein, be it chic peas, lentils, or chicken.
The Military Diet
This diet is comprised of half a grapefruit, one slice of toast, accompanied by coffee or tea. Though this diet isn’t an unhealthy one to maintain, keep in mind that grapefruit, if you’re not careful, can interact unexpectedly with some medications; in particular, it can counteract the effects of blood pressure medication.
The No-carb Low-carb Diet
Contrary to common believe, gluten in your diet is not a terrible thing, (unless you have visited a doctor and confirmed you are gluten intolerant). And while you probably shouldn’t keep a diet comprised predominately of carbs, it’s okay, and arguably even beneficial, to eat some. If possible stick to healthier carbs, like whole grains or quinoa.
