The best way to get a good babysitter is by canvassing your friends and family for someone they know or have used before. In any event, check your babysitting candidate’s references and run a background check. This is standard procedure when hiring a sitter.
Ask them about specific scenarios
Much like you would if you were conducting a job interview, asking situationally based questions will help you to decipher whether or not your candidate will be good in unexpected situations.
Do a trial run
If you’re still feeling uneasy about your potential sitter, have them come and meet your kids while you in the vicinity. This is for your benefit and also for the benefit of your children, so that they can get used to this new caretaker while they still have the comfort of your presence.
Questions to ask your potential babysitter:
How long have you been babysitting?
Are you ever available on short notice?
Do you have reliable transportation?
Do you have experience caring for children of [X] age?
What activities do you like to do with kids?
How comfortable are you enforcing household rules?
How do you typically deal with behavior issues?
