3 Types of Laser Eye Surgery
In this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show: Your Wellness Fix, Dr. Ellen Anderson Penno from Western Laser Eye Associates explains the different types of laser eye surgery.
Marc: I have Ellen from Western Laser Eye Associates. And I’m so excited because today we’re going to learn about eye surgery, especially for correcting our lenses. So, talk to me about the different procedures—because I find that someone that’s never had one, it can be really intimidating to think about getting eye surgery.
Ellen: So, the oldest and sort of tried-and-true method is the PRK. And it basically involves removing the very surface layer of the cornea using a laser to reshape the cornea on the surface. It takes a little bit longer to recover from, seven to ten days off of work for that one, but the results are equally good as the other procedures. The next one to come along, which started in the 90s, is the Lasik, originally called flap and zap. And that is where you create a corneal flap on the corneas, like the clear windshield front of the eye, you lift the flap and you treat underneath the flap and put the flap back down. And creating that lasik flap does give you more rapid recovery. Most people could be back to work in a day or so. And then the most recent one, which has been done for a few years now, is called SMILE. And that’s an acronym to describe using an ultra fast femtosecond laser to create what’s called a lenticule. This also creates a little contact lens shaped lenticule, which is then removed and that’s what reshapes the cornea.
