How to: Celebrate Mother’s Day While Keeping Your Social Distance
Mother’s Day is around the corner and it’s already become clear that this year’s celebrations will hit a little differently than in year’s past. Pandemic-related closures and social distancing have put something of a damper on popular Mother’s Day traditions, such as going out to eat and taking a family trip, leaving a lot of us without solid plans for this important day. If you’ve found yourself in this boat, keep reading to find out how you can celebrate mom while practicing physical distancing.
A doorstep drop-off
If you have your heart set on preparing a home-cooked meal and serving it to mom, your plans will require just a slight edit. In accordance with pandemic rules, many are turning to doorstep drop-offs in an effort to care for those who can’t leave the house. You can do the same for mom with a special meal, her favorite bottle of wine, and/or any other goodies you think she would appreciate. Pack it up in a basket and top it off with a card!
A virtual serenade
If mom’s got family she hasn’t connected with in a while, this is the time to get her reconnected via FaceTime, Skype, or Zoom. To make the reunion even more special, have everyone prepare a few words about what they love most about mom or what they’ve learned from her. (Warning: this idea may result in tears.)
Plant something together
Just because you and your mom live in different households, doesn’t mean you can’t garden together. Mail your mom a pack of seeds for Mother’s Day and save a few for yourself. Plant them in your respective gardens on Mother’s Day and mom can enjoy the surprise of what her seeds will bloom into.
Prepare a photo slideshow
Putting pictures to music is a simple idea that your mom will absolutely love, especially if you manage to find some pictures she hasn’t seen before. Contact extended family and her old friends to find out if they have any hidden gems stored away and queue them up to her all-time favorite song.
