Celebrity Access: Getting To Know Sabrina Smelko
On this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show: Celebrity Access, Holly Nimens gets to know Designer and HGTV’s Sabrina Smelko. Keep reading for the highlights of their interview!
Holly Nimens: What sets you apart as a designer?
Sabrina Smelko: I think my background actually. I went to school for illustration so I had a four year intensive fine art training background, and we learned everything from using conte on paper to life drawing to actual tight renderings. I also did some interior design electives. So I feel like I got such a wide gamut, and I think that fine art background really changes how I look at things. I don’t see a room necessarily as just a floor plan, I kind of feel what it feels like and get the vibe for it and then it’s usually a very artistic process from there.
HN: So, using that artistic process, let’s look at your habits and what makes you successful with your every day habits?
SS: It’s probably a bad answer, but I’m very restless and impatient, and I feel that that’s kind of defined my life and my career because I’m just trying things. And I think so many people are afraid to put themselves out there or start their own business or make a website and I just don’t really have that fear. And sometimes, that’s been a bad thing, but for the most part, it’s served me well. And I just think, life’s too short, if you want to try something, do it, and that’s really been the defining principal of my career: just kind of rolling with the punches and having fun.
HN: Can you tell me how TV has shaped you and defined your life?
SS: That’s a good question. I think of it as just another creative outlet for me; it’s just a job! I’m designing things, and that’s what I love to do, so it just kind of feels like a natural fit. At the same time, it is bizarre to be sitting in these chairs and to be interviews. It’s kind of surreal. I feel like it’s given me a lot of credibility and legitimacy and it’s given me such a platform that all of the other endeavors I was working on have more light shined on them.
