Dr. Decks and Regal Ideas
On this episode of The Marc and Mandy Show, Marc chats with Jason Russell about his deck building company, Dr. Decks, and a program with Regal Ideas. To learn more, check out the video above or keep reading for three best practices to observe when building a deck.
Use treated wood and seal the joists
To prevent deck decay, you first off want to make sure you’re using treated lumber. That said, treated lumber isn’t enough to prevent water from leaking underneath deck boards into the screw holes, eventually forcing rot to occur. With that said, make sure you seal the joists in combination with using treated wood.
Pay attention to post bases positioning
Avoid encasing your post bases in the concrete. If you do this, it will wick moisture and/or come into contact with topsoil when it rains. Instead, raise the bottom of the post bases a couple of inches from the concrete and the soil to reduce its contact with organic material and moisture.
Seal post ends
Again, to safeguard against rot and deck decay, you should also seal your post ends. When your sealant dries, it acts like a cap to your post ends and helps to prevent water wicking and infiltration, which can lead to rot and decay.
