Q: My home needs a lot of work. Where should I start?
Sebastian Sevcallo: Basically, you want to start with what is it you really want done in your home. What are your bigger ticket items and what are your smaller ticket items? Also consider: how much money do you have to work with, because that’s really going to be the deciding factor in which direction you want to go in. Do you want to do things in the bathroom or the living room—maybe the bedroom is more of a big ticket item for you. A lot of people opt to do work in their kitchen due to the addition of value a renovated kitchen can ensue. The key is to have priority and focus your efforts.
Q: Is it a good idea to renovate an older home?
SS: It’s not always practical to renovate an older home. Older homes can present a lot of challenges that newer homes don’t. There are a lot of things, such as old aluminium wiring or old framing, which will need to be updated to code if you’re going to be opening up walls. There also tends to be a lot of asbestos in older home that will need to remediated properly. So, it really depends on what you want to do in the older home and just how old the home is.
