Expert Q&A: ICF Construction
In this segment of The Marc and Mandy Show, Antonio Giovinazzo of WALL-Up Carpentry answers questions about ICF construction. Keep reading for the Q & A.
Q: What is ICF construction?
Antonio Giovinazzo: ICF stands for Insulated Concrete Forms. And Insulated Concrete Form is a different variation of the concrete form. It has insulation on both sides of the form. So after pouring the concrete, the form stays there, and it allows both sides of the concrete to remain insulated.
Q: What are the benefits of using ICF rather than conventional construction methods?
Antonio Giovinazzo: ICF blocks are extremely energy efficient, they allow for a lot of savings on the heating bill, they’re sound-proof, they’re fire-rated, they’re resistant to winds of 200 mph, and they control moisture extremely well, which helps with a clean and safe family atmosphere for your home. As well, since there is insulation on both sides of the foundation wall, the R value is high enough so that you don’t need strapping or framing of your exterior walls, as well as insulation. So it’s ready for drywall.
